Hava/Fava Broad Bean

Also called horse bean, this ancient Old World bean is notable for its fine resistance to cold and ability to germinate in barely-warmed soils. Sow in early spring around pea planting time. A prolific producer of large, tasty beans. Harvest the green-shelled beans or let them mature into dry beans. A great cool-season, nitrogen-fixing green manure. Note: Some people, particularly those of Mediterranean descent, can have an allergic reaction to these beans. (70 days)
